Note:
The lab will be moving to the Department of Biology at the University of Notre Dame at the start of 2021.
Undergraduate Student Opportunities:
We are looking for 2 new undergraduate students to work with us on our research concerning temperate tree ecology during the spring and summer of 2021.
Ph.D. Student Opportunities:
The Swenson Lab is searching for 1-2 new graduate students to begin in the fall of 2021. We are looking for students interested in tree functional ecology, life history tradeoffs, demography and community ecology. Funding is available to support students interested in working in eastern North American forests and/or Asian subtropical or tropical forests. Previous research experience is essential for either position. Experience working in Asia or experience in tropical botany is essential for applicants interested in working in southeast Asia. Both positions will be associated with an NSF-funded Dimensions of Biodiversity project and will be expected to leverage existing data from long-term forest dynamics plots and NEON as a part of their research.
The lab (www.swensonlab.com) will be joining the Department of Biology at the University of Notre Dame (https://biology.nd.edu) in January 2021 and the University of Notre Dame Environmental Research Center (http://underc.nd.edu) will serve as a hub for our research on North American tree biology. If you are interested in joining our team, please email a description of your research experiences and interests and a CV to Dr. Nate Swenson (nswenson "a" nd.edu).
Postdoc Opportunities:
The Swenson Lab has funding to support one new postdoctoral researcher in tree genomics. We are particularly interested in researchers with experience in genome assembly and analyses and/or population genomics. Preference will be given to researchers with experience working with non-model plant and/or tree species. The initial appointment is for 1 year and can be extended for, at least, an additional 2 years given satisfactory progress. The researcher will be a part of an international collaborative team working on a project funded by a new NSF Dimensions of Biodiversity grant.
The lab (www.swensonlab.com) will be based in the Department of Biology at the University of Notre Dame (https://biology.nd.edu) beginning in January 2021. The position can begin as early as spring 2021, but we are willing to consider applicants that cannot start until late summer 2021. Due to the computational nature of the work and the ongoing pandemic, we are happy to discuss remote working options.
If you are interested, please contact Dr. Nate Swenson (nswenson "a" nd.edu) with a brief (1 paragraph) statement of your research interests and background, a CV and the names of and contact information for 2 potential references.
